The PCYC will be closed from 7pm Friday 14 March 2014
After nine years as a vital part of the Sunbury Community, the Sunbury Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) will be closing the doors for the last time at 8.00pm on Friday 14 March.
Since opening for operation in January 2005 we have serviced around 25,000 youth visitors per annum and been the recipients of unwavering community support.
We have lived by our Mission Statement, adhering to the premise that 'we will work with Sunbury's youth to empower them for life through exercise and physical activity, teaching discipline, respect and goodwill in communities. We strive to create interaction between youths of varied and diversified backgrounds, treating all as equal and important. The PCYC fosters healthy, friendly relationships between Sunbury's youth and the local police'.
We have placed emphasis and importance on working with at risk and disengaged youth, helping them to successfully assimilate into their community. We have contributed to a drop in youth crime, attributable to the honest relationships developed between PCYC staff (police and citizens) and participants, and the strong sense of community, self-worth, accountability and personal responsibility instilled in PCYC members.
In addition to the drop in youth crime, the PCYC has had many success stories with young people battling teenage obesity, self-harm and depression. Our participant retention rate was extremely high, and many of our participants went on to become trainees and volunteers at the gym and then into the fitness industry.
The PCYC has been a fabulous place for community members of all capabilities and backgrounds to volunteer, employing a legally blind paraplegic with an acquired brain injury, a deaf mute, and two qualified personal trainers in this capacity. The PCYC also took work experience students from schools, Tafes and Universities from Hume and its surrounds, including the Macedon Ranges Specialist School and Distinctive Options.
We would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers Andrew, Glenn and Trevor and too many others to mention by name. Just know that we appreciated each and every one of you giving of your time and yourselves to help us and your community at the PCYC.
We would also like to thank our strongest supporters; the Sunbury Masonic Lodge, the Sunbury Community Health Centre, the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court, St Mary’s Anglican Church, Gill Engineering, Sunbury Heights Primary School, the Sunbury Bowling Club, Bunnings Sunbury, Sunbury Soccer Club and all our neighbouring businesses and the community of Sunbury.
